Below are general symptoms of depression. Most people with clinical depression will experience a number of these symptoms. It is not necessary for a person to present with all the symptoms to meet criteria for depression or to seek treatment.

Symptoms of Depression

  • Depressed mood
  • Reduced or lack of interest in things that used to give you pleasure
  • Significant weight loss or gain, or change in appetite
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Feeling agitated (may feel anxious) and functioning "slower"
  • Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day
  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
  • Lack of concentration, inattention
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
